Biography

submitted by the candidate or their team
I’m a Nanaimo city councillor, former MP, and community advocate with expertise in trade and foreign policy. I’ve delivered results before—from improving care for seniors and people with disabilities to protecting old growth forests—and I’m ready to fight for you again.

I bring deep expertise in international trade and foreign policy, and a proven record of delivering real results for the Nanaimo–Ladysmith community.

In 2019, I made history as the second Green MP ever elected to Parliament. I fought effectively for trade policies that protect Canadian jobs, consumer standards, and the environment. I pushed to improve long-term care, safeguard pensions, and preserve old-growth forests. Collaborating across party lines, I secured better support for people with disabilities, the formal recognition community media, and won unanimous support for protecting British pensioners living in Canada.

I’ve also served as Executive Director of the Nanaimo Unitarian Shelter, providing support for those experiencing homelessness. As a city councillor, I continue to advocate for affordable housing, quality healthcare, and urgent climate action.

Recently, I was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal for significant contributions to our community. I’ve stood up for this community before, and during these uncertain times, you can trust I’ll do it again.

Reason for running

I'm running to tackle the rising cost of living and secure a better future for our community. We need bold action on affordable housing, fair trade, Donald Trump's threats and tariffs, and protecting our environment. I’m ready to go to Ottawa again to fight for Nanaimo–Ladysmith.

I’m running because people in Nanaimo–Ladysmith are feeling squeezed—from housing and rent to groceries and energy bills—and they deserve leadership that’s ready to act. As a former MP and current city councillor, I’ve fought effectively for our community: securing better trade protections, pushing for affordable housing, supporting people with disabilities, and defending old-growth forests.

Now, I’m ready to return to Ottawa with practical, forward-looking solutions. I’ll fight for major federal investment in co-op and non-market housing, tax fairness that lifts the burden off working Canadians, and strong trade policies that protect local jobs and supply chains—especially in the face of U.S. tariffs and Donald Trump’s threats against our sovereignty.

The Green Party’s plan includes eliminating federal tax on the first $40,000 of income, building strategic reserves of critical resources, and investing in clean energy and home retrofits—cutting costs while creating good local jobs and future-proofing our economy. We’ll also take real action on the climate crisis: ending fossil fuel subsidies, protecting biodiversity, and supporting a just transition that leaves no worker or community behind.

People want real leadership that understands our challenges and knows how to deliver. That’s exactly why I’m running: to secure stability, affordability, and a livable future for everyone in our community.
