Benjamin Abis' Platform for Etobicoke North
Etobicoke North deserves bold, people-first leadership that delivers real solutions to the everyday struggles our community faces. Benjamin Abis is fighting for a future where no one is left behind — where working-class families, seniors, newcomers, and youth all have what they need to thrive.
Here's what Benjamin and the NDP will fight for:
Build 1,500 Affordable Homes Every Year in Etobicoke North
- By declaring housing as "essential infrastructure," we can fast-track zoning, unlock public land, secure federal funding, and coordinate with the city and province to build homes our community can actually afford.
Make Essentials Affordable
- Permanently remove GST on essential groceries, diapers, heating, and cellphone bills.
- Cap grocery prices and stop price-fixing
Real Rent Control, Nationwide
- Introduce National Rent Control and ban harmful landlord practices like fixed-term leases, renovictions, and demovictions that displace tenants.
Expand Pharmacare & Build a Public Drug Manufacturer
- Expand Pharmacare to cover more life-saving medications and establish a publicly owned drug manufacturer to secure a stable, affordable supply of essential medicines.
$10 a Day Childcare & School Nutrition
- Fully fund the $10-a-day childcare program and expand student nutrition programs so that no child goes to school hungry.
Dignity for Seniors
- Increase the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) for seniors so they can retire with security and dignity.
Benjamin has lived in Etobicoke North for over 20 years. He raised his kids here, worships in the same community spaces, and shops at the same local stores. This riding is home — and he's ready to fight for the people who call it home too.
Biography
Benjamin Abis has proudly called Etobicoke North home for over 20 years.
A retired public servant, Benjamin worked at the Toronto South Detention Centre (TSDC), starting as services staff before becoming a Correctional Officer. During his time there, he was a strong advocate for rehabilitation programs and championed better wages, benefits, and safer working conditions as a union officer with OPSEU. He is also a former licensed paralegal and legal instructor in Ontario.
Benjamin’s lifelong commitment to community safety and public service earned him recognition from both the Toronto Police Service and Toronto Fire Services for his selfless contributions. Before immigrating to Canada, he practiced law in the Philippines and offered free legal aid to those most in need. He also served as a Senior Executive at a multinational corporation for nearly two decades and previously worked in the Presidential Management Staff under two administrations, overseeing major national government projects.
Deeply rooted in his community, Benjamin has been a long-time volunteer in his local church, supporting youth and student programs. As a parent, he served on school councils, advocating for stronger connections between schools and families. He understands firsthand the challenges working-class families face and believes in the power of strong, accessible public services.
Now, as your NDP candidate for Etobicoke North, Benjamin is fighting for real solutions — lowering the cost of living, protecting and expanding public healthcare, improving our schools, and building safer, more affordable communities for all.
