Biography

from their website

Kimball Cariou is the Communist Party’s federal election candidate in Vancouver East. Born on Treaty 6 territory in Saskatoon, Kimball’s working class prairie family background includes both Metis and European settler ancestry. In 1993, he and his family moved to East Vancouver, where he was the editor of the People’s Voice newspaper for over 26 years. Since his teenage years, Kimball has been involved in movements for labour and Indigenous rights, and in resistance against war, racism, homophobia, transphobia and misogyny. He is active in his housing cooperative and is a strong advocate to stop displacement and launch a massive low-income housing program. He calls to reverse the federal government’s massive tax breaks and subsidies to fossil fuel industries.

A lifetime anti-war activist, Kimball opposes U.S. pressure to add hundreds of billions of dollars to Canada’s military budget. Instead, he wants to cut military spending by 75 percent, and put these funds into social programs and action on climate justice. “It’s not enough to criticize the injustices of capitalism,” says Kimball. “We have to get rid of this private profit system and build a socialist future. Voting Communist is one important step in the struggle to end exploitation, oppression and environmental destruction, and to create a sustainable and just world.”
